combining (and contrasting) a luxurious sector of life such as a LOVELY girl and scenes from poor, rough parts of town ALWAYS and automaticaly creates CONTRASTS, and contrasts create TENSIONS, of course. Going one styep further: tensions create INTEREST (in the outcome) and involvement (on which side would WE, that is I, choose to be?)
In this case: where would I put my sympathy? With the stylish but obviously pampered girl in her expensive dress? Or with the poor people living their raw, difficult lives in these bare settings?
So these pictures invite us to take a social stand: on the side of (stylish) luxury or do we (that is again: I) admire the poor, vulnerablke but in their way admirable people the MORE?
